Through Endurance We Conquer (Part II)
- The Journey Begins

Dear Friend,

Let's dig in to where we left off with our story a couple of days ago ...

While sitting in our comfy living rooms with our
bunny slippers on and sipping hot chocolate it is
hard to imagine what would make anyone want to go to
Antarctica, let alone cross it on foot
but that’s exactly what Ernest Shackleton set out to do.

He just had his mind made up to do what no one had
ever dreamed of accomplishing and so it began.

The Endurance set sail from England in August of
1914 and as they made their way south actually picked up
Earnest Shackleton at a port of call down in Buenos Aires
where he had been attending to business.

With the crew now complete they began making
their way south into
the Antarctic waters.

At last they reached South Georgia Island.
This island was known as
the Gateway to the Antarctic and the last sliver of civilization for
thousands of miles.

The few inhabitants of this desolate island were a few Norwegian
whalers who manned some outposts on its east coast.

These Whalers told Shackleton that the present
conditions were indicated that this winter was going
to though it would be one of the worst in recent memory.
Our course, the pack ice from the
harsh cold would make the journey to Antarctica extremely
difficult.

Shackleton and his crew stayed on South Georgia Island for over
A month waiting for conditions to improve. While the conditions
didn’t get worse, they didn’t get better either; they were at the point
of “now or never.”

They resumed their journey, heading east as far as they can,
hoping to avoid the worst of the pack ice.

Fortunately the weather let up a bit.

With a strong ship, a worthy crew, blue sky,
sunshine and calm air, enthusiasm was extremely high.
Everything was going according to plan but Shackleton
and the crew of the Endurance had no idea what was about to happen.

You won’t want to miss this, check back in a couple of days
to find out what happens next…
